Chapter Nineteen

HE WAS JEALOUS. SHOULDN’T be. Had no right to be. But the thought of Ryland sharing these experiences with someone who wasn’t him pissed Lucas right off. And there was one man in particular whose face kept flittering through his mind—Everett Bolton. He’d seen candid shots of the two men together, Ryland and Everett, and each picture spoke of an intimacy, a depth of affection that went far deeper than simply friends.

“Was Everett one of those men?” he asked, his words soaked in a bitter jealousy and lacked the hesitancy that had plagued his earlier questions.

“You want to know if I’ve fucked, Everett, boy? Plan to write that titbit into your report.”

“Yes, I want to know if you’ve fucked him,” Lucas hissed, ignoring Ryland’s obvious dig at his being an undercover cop who needed to report back to his boss on the man’s activities. But not on this. Not on any of this. Not if Lucas wanted to avoid being stripped off his badge and hauled in front of a judge on corruption charges.

“Jealous?” a dangerous smirk wrapping itself around the rhetorical question. They both knew he was and denying it would be pointless.

“I’ve seen photos taken of the two of you... public press photos from social functions you’ve both attended, and those taken more covertly—”

Ryland snorted. “Not as covertly as you might think. We Tomasi assume the police are always lurking in the background.”

“Fuck, whatever,” he snarled. “But you can’t deny that there’s an intimacy between you that can’t just be brushed off as a close friendship.”

“Of course, it can’t. Everett is family, and my best friend... hell, the only person I shared a closer bond with is my brother Gio.”

“Are you saying you haven’t fucked Everett?” His throat tightened as he waited for the answer, not sure if he’d believe Ryland if he denied sleeping with Everett.

“I’m not saying that all... just trying to provide context because it’s not a simple black and white situation.”

It was to him. Either Ryland had fucked the heir to the Tomasi Famiglia as many of the pictures had suggested or he’d not. There was nothing more straightforward than that. A yes or no answer... Pain lanced through his chest wrapped around his ribs and squeezed each one in turn before working its way between them and clawed desperately at his heart. He’d seen photos too of Everett with his girlfriend Aliya, and Lucas knew the mafia heir adored her, which only made the pain tearing through his soul worse.

“Am I nothing more than a substitute for him?”

“What? No. Definitely not. Everett would tell you that himself... if his knowing you were still alive wasn’t detrimental to your health.”

“Then what?”

“Context. A bucket load of it, that if you were a little more patient, tesoro, you’d have been given it.... and now you’re going to have to wait a little longer, boy,” Ryland grumbled, nudging at Luca’s shoulder. “The water has gotten cold... and the wine is still sitting back in the bedroom. I think we’ll need a few glasses if we’re to make it through this conversation.
